Proven Sires Make ‘Sense’ During First Session of Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale

The first session of the 2019 Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training sale closed Monday with increases in average and median over last year’s first session and gross sales of $11,402,500.

A colt by Street Sense (Hip 156) topped the first session when sold halfway through the day for $500,000 (video). The bay colt was purchased by Kenny McPeek, agent from the consignment of Top Line Sales, agent after working a quarter in 21.4 during the under tack show last week (video). A half-brother to two winners out of the Forest Wildcat mare Forest Fashion, this colt is from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Charlestown Rag (IRE) and Group 1 winner Casual Look.

A close second on the results rankings was an Uncle Mo colt (Hip 236) which sold for $475,000 to Martin S. Schwarz from the consignment of Eddie Woods, agent (video). That juvenile, who worked an eighth in 10.2 during the under tack show (video), is out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Lady Godiva, making him a half brother to Grade 1 winner Leofric (Candy Ride-ARG).

The top-priced filly on the day was a daughter of Ghostzapper (Hip 205) which sold for $400,000 (video). The dark bay or brown filly was purchased by Lauren Carlisle, agent from the consignment of Pelican State Thoroughbreds, agent after working an eighth in 10.2 during the under tack show (video). By the sire of champion fillies Judy the Beauty and Holy Helena, Hip 205 is out of 2013 Miss Preakness S. winner I’m Mom’s Favorite and comes from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Tout Charmant.

Overall, 156 juveniles changed hands for a total of $11,402,500, good for an average of $73,093, which represented a 4.2% increase over last year’s first session average of $70,151. The session median rose 19.4% to $43,000 from $36,000 in 2018.

The Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training sale will resume May 21 at 11 AM.
