Quality sells at NY Bred Yearlings; Saratoga summer sales gross more than $100 million

After last week's record-breaking Saratoga Sale (Aug. 5-6), the New York Bred Yearlings sale delivered a near-record gross that pushed Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga summer sales gross over $100,000,000 for the first time. Presented as a selection of "New York's Finest" yearlings, the NY Bred Yearlings sale also established a new record median.

"It was a very encouraging week," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. We started last Monday at 6:30, we finished this week on Monday at about 5:00, and in that week we sold over $100,000,000 worth of horses… It's a pretty significant accomplishment."

Following an evening of enthusiastic participation on Sunday, the final session of the NY Bred Yearlings sale brought more of the same:

Klaravich Stable went to $370,000 to secure a colt by Quality Road (hip 595) to top the session and the sale (video). Consigned by Winter Quarter Farm, agent, the bay colt is a full brother to stakes winner Derrynane out of the graded stakes placed stakes winner Portmagee (Hard Spun). The immediate family includes Grade 1 winner Mitterand. Hip 595 was bred by Waterville Lake Stable.

The top filly of the session and sale came in the form of a daughter of Connect (hip 486) sold for $300,000 to West Bloodstock, agent for Repole Stable (video). Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent for Longford Farm, the filly is out of graded stakes winner Georgie's Angel (Bellamy Road) and is a half-sister to five winners, including multiple Grade 1 winner Cave Rock (Arrogate). Hip 486 was bred by Kathleen Burke Schweizer & Daniel J. Burke.

Rounding out the top five sold during the second session were:

  • A colt by Yaupon (hip 485), sold for $275,000 to trainer Michael J. Maker from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The dark bay or brown colt is out of multiple stakes winner Frostie Anne (Frost Giant), from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner I Ain't Bluffing. Hip 485 was bred by Rockridge Stud, Saratoga Glen Farm, & Beal's Racing Stable.
  • A colt by Not This Time (hip 570), sold for $270,000 to Adelphi Racing Club & Chief Horse Futures from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The gray or roan colt is the second foal out of graded stakes placed My Galina (Medaglia d'Oro), and hails from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Stellar Jayne, Starrer, Just FYI, and Star Billing. Hip 570 was bred by Kingsport Farm.
  • A filly by Maxfield (hip 420), sold for $260,000 to Filly Special from the consignment of Thorndale Farm, agent. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Cabales (Pulpit), already the dam of four winners, including Grade 1 placed Grade 2 winner Run Away (Run Away and Hide). Hip 420 was bred by Eaton and Thorne.

Over the course of two days of selling, 182 yearlings sold for $19,095,000, the third highest gross in the sale's history, only to the consecutive records set in 2022 and 2023. The average was $104,920, up 9.4% over last year's average of $95,880, and marked the third time that this sale has produced a six-figure average. The median rose 18.7% percent to $86,500 from $75,000 last year to establish a new sale record.
