Consistent Trade in Third Session of The October Sale
The October Sale continued its 2018 run Wednesday with similar numbers to last year, with session numbers down only slightly from the sales electric second session on Tuesday.
A robust array of sires accounted for the session’s top hips, including exceptional young sire UNCLE MO, classic sire BODEMEISTER, current leading freshman sire GOLDENCENTS, Grade 1 winning juvenile CARPE DIEM, and three-time leading sire TAPIT.
A filly by UNCLE MO topped the session when sold for $350,000 to Mike Ryan, agent for e5 Racing (video). The bay filly, offered as Hip 933 by Romans Racing & Sales, agent, is out of the stakes placed UNBRIDLED’S SONG mare MISS LUANN, who has already produced two stakes winning fillies. Most notably, that mare is responsible for 2017 UAE Oaks (G3) winner NOMORERICHBLONDES, a graduate of this sale in 2015. Bred in Kentucky by Blue Devil Racing, the session topper hails from the immediate family of Broodmare of the Year PICO TENERIFFE; multiple champion MARCHFIELD; and Grade/Group 1 winners DUKE OF MARMALADE, VIGLIOTTO, LATIN AMERICAN, GABINA, GALETTO, and GOLDMARK.
The session’s top colt was a well-related colt by BODEMEISTER which sold for $300,000 to trainer Catherine M. Day-Phillips, agent (video). Offered as Hip 859 by Anderson Farms, agent, the dark bay or brown colt is a half-brother to two stakes winners out of LOVING VINDICATION, by VINDICATION, including Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in Canada WONDER GADOT, millionaire, graded stakes winner, and classic winner of the prestigious Queen’s Plate S. earlier this year. LOVING VINDICATION is also dam of Grade 2 placed stakes winner SOLEMN TRIBUTE. The immediate family also includes Grade 1 winners MASHAALAH and FOLK ART. Hip 859 was foaled in Ontario.
“The market is overall consistent, similar to what it was last year,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “[It’s been] solid, fair trade. Most of the horses are getting sold, so we’re fairly pleased overall.”
In sum, 723 yearlings have changed hands over the first three sessions for a total of $24,575,900, good for an average of $33,992. The three-session median held at $15,000. Wednesday’s session saw 244 yearlings sell for $7,990,900, with an average and median of $32,750 and $12,000, respectively. The session’s RNA rate was 23.8%, in line with the cumulative RNA rate of 22.9%, both down slightly from 2017’s three-session buyback rate.
