The third session of the 2024 Kentucky October Yearlings sale was held Wednesday in Lexington, Kentucky, yielding results trending upwards over the 2023 edition of the sale. The three-session average is currently tracking 7.5% higher than last year’s full-sale average.

A filly by super sire Curlin (hip 1195) topped the session when sold for $500,000 to Gary Barber from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent (video). The dark bay or brown filly is out the Bellamy road mare Achalaya, who has already produced five winners from five to race, including multimillionaire multiple Grade 1 winner Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) and graded stakes winner Chess’s Dream (Jess’s Dream). The mare’s current 2-year-old, Charlotte’s Heart (Authentic), is a stakes placed winner since the catalogue. Hip 1195 was bred in New York by 30 Year Farm.

Wednesday’s session topping $500,000 price tag is good for the most expensive filly of this year’s sale through three sessions. The current sale topper is a Curlin colt sold for $550,000 during the second session.

“Today was another excellent session of the Kentucky October Yearlings sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “It’s been a really fun three days so far, seeing the level of energy, the level of activity. It’s been really encouraging.”

Other top hips from the session include:

  • A colt by perennial leading sire Into Mischief (hip 855), sold for $450,000 to Mahmud Mouni from the consignment of Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent (video). Out of the winning Yes It’s true mare Shopit, the bay colt is a full brother to multiple Grade 1 placed stakes winner Shoplifted. The immediate family also includes this year’s Preakness S. (G1) victor Seize the Grey. Hip 855 was bred in Kentucky by Newtownanner Stud Farm.
  • A colt by Justify (hip 987), sold for $350,000 to SBM Training & Sales from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. Out of the winning Empire Maker mare Take a Memo, the bay colt is a half-brother to four winners from as many to race, including multiple stakes placed Imperial Gun (Gun Runner). Hip 987 was bred in Kentucky by Adrian Regan & Fergus Galvin.
  • A Constitution colt (hip 917), sold for $310,000 to Novogratz Racing Stables from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. Out of the Broken Vow mare Special Thanks, the chestnut colt is a half-brother to three winners from three to race, including graded stakes placed Eve of War (Declaration of War). Hip 917 was bred in Kentucky by Cypress Creek Equine.

“We’re looking forward to the final day tomorrow,” added Browning. “We expect the same trends to continue. We’re three-quarters of the way through the sale and statistically, all the indicators are positive.”

Through three session, 839 yearlings have sold for $43,346,500. The running average for those sessions is $51,644, trending 7.5% up over last year’s full-sale average of $48,045. The median held steady at $20,000. The RNA rate through three sessions, including public post sales, is just 18.0%.
