Violence Colt Tops Opening Session of NY Bred Yearlings

The Fasig-Tipton NY Bred Yearlings sale held Sunday evening at the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, New York, posted gains in average and median over last year’s opening session.

A colt by Violence (Hip 306) topped the sale’s opening session when sold for $380,000 to Baccari Bloodstock from the consignment of Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa, agent (video). The bay colt is the first foal out of the winning Liam’s Map mare Liam’s Lookout, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Itsaknockout and stakes winner Storm Power. Hip 306 hails from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Believe You Can.

“It was a very good opening session to the 2023 NY Bred Yearlings sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The average was up, the median was up… Last year was essentially a record-breaking sale and to be statistically improved in two key categories is a really good start.”

Rounding out the top five prices were:

  • Hip 372, a colt by Improbable out of Perazzi, sold for $300,000 to CHC Inc., Siena Farm, & Maverick Racing from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. The chestnut colt is a half-brother to three winners from as many to race out of the Curlin mare Perazzi. His fourth dam is European champion and multiple Group 1 winner Chimes of Freedom, who produced Eclipse Champion Aldebaran and Grade 1 winner Good Journey.
  • Hip 369, a filly by Gun Runner out of graded stakes winner Pantsonfire (IRE), sold for $290,000 to Trade Winds Farm from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The bay filly hails from the immediate family of Two Thousand Guineas (G1) winner Island Sands. Hip 369 was bred by Richard Nicolai.
  • Hip 396, a filly by Frosted out of Royal Mandate, sold for $250,000 to Taproot for Carem Stables from the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. The gray or roan filly is the first foal out of a Strong Mandate half-sister to graded stakes winner Cali Star and graded stakes winner and producer Delightful Joy, dam of this year’s Summertime Oaks (G2) winner Window Shopping.
  • Hip 349, a filly by Vekoma out of Mo Savings, sold for $235,000 to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners & Repole Stables from the consignment of Straight Line Equine Sales, agent. The chestnut filly is the second foal out a full sister to multiple stakes winner Clipthecouponannie (Uncle Mo). Hip 349 was bred by Windylea Farm.

During Sunday’s session, 53 yearlings sold for $5,999,000. The average increased 5% to $113,189 from $107,813 during last year’s opening session. The median rose 29.9% to $100,000 from $77,000 during the corresponding session in 2022.
