Tapit Filly On Top of ‘Vibrant’ Second Session of Kentucky October Yearlings

A filly by three-time leading sire Tapit topped a busy second session of the 2022 Kentucky October Yearlings sale held Tuesday, October 25, at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky. The day was marked by diverse bidding from start to finish, with 10 unique buyers and consignors connected to each of the session’s top 10 offerings.

DJ Stable went to $600,000 to secure Tuesday’s session topper, a filly by three-time leading sire Tapit (Hip 629) offered by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent (video). The gray or roan filly is out of Carolyn’s Cat, a Grade 2 winner and multiple graded stakes winning daughter of Forestry. Carolyn’s Cat is already the dam of five winners, including this filly’s full sister Mufajaah, a graded stakes winner, multiple stakes winner, and Grade 2 placed earner of $267,140. Hip 629 was bred in Kentucky by Newtown Anner Stud.

“We had a tremendous session today from start to finish,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The first horse in the ring this morning brought six figures. The last horse in the ring tonight brought six figures. There was brisk activity and great trade from start to finish today, same as yesterday.”

A colt by three-time leading sire Tapit (Hip 752) was the session’s highest-priced colt, sold for $560,000 to Tom McCrocklin, agent, from the consignment of Gainesway, agent (video). The bay colt is out of Canadian champion Delightful Mary, already the dam of two winners. The colt’s dam is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner, multiple graded stakes winner, and Grade 1 placed millionaire Delightful Kiss. Hip 752 was bred in Kentucky by John C. Oxley.

A colt by last year’s leading first-crop sire and current leading second-crop sire Gun Runner (Hip 685), sold for $550,000 to Winchell Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Lane’s End, agent (video). The dark bay or brown colt is the second foal out of the stakes placed Speightstown mare Classy Dancer, from the immediate family of Horse of the Year Tiznow and Grade 1 winning millionaire Paynter. Hip 685 was bred in Kentucky by Andrew N. Warren.

Rounding out the session’s top five prices were:

  • A colt from the second crop of Good Magic (Hip 778), sold for $400,000 to Speedway Stable from the consignment of Hunter Valley Farm, agent. The chestnut colt is a half-sibling to three winners, including stakes winner King of the Court (Speightstown), out of the A.P. Indy mare Divine Escapade, a daughter of Grade 1 winning millionaire Madcap Escapade.
  • A colt by Uncle Mo (Hip 425), sold for $350,000 to BSW/Crow Colts Group, Spendthrift, and Gandharvi from the consignment of Wynnstay Sales, agent. The gray or roan colt is out of the stakes placed Tactical Cat mare Adore You, making him a half-sibling to four winners, including multiple stakes winners Piedi Bianchi and Outadore, both Grade 1 placed, and stakes winner Mind Reader. Hip 425 was bred in Kentucky by Dean Baer and Greg Baer DVM.

“(There is) great competition for what are perceived to be the quality offerings, but you’re also seeing a depth of the market,” added Browning. “I thought today was a little bit stronger in the middle market than yesterday… It’s a very vibrant marketplace and great participation, just a very healthy marketplace today.”

During Tuesday’s session, 265 yearlings sold for $15,752,400, good for an average of $59,443 and a median of $25,000. Over the course of the first two days of selling, 524 yearlings changed hands for $28,232,900, up 13% from last year’s two-session gross of $24,977,100. The two-session average is $53,880, up 19.5% from $45,085 during the comparable period in 2021. The median over the first two sessions was $25,000, up 25% over last year’s two-session median of $20,000. The RNA for the first two sessions was 23%.
