Arrogate Filly Tops ‘Strong’ Third Session of Kentucky October Yearlings

Strong trade continued during the third session of the 2022 Kentucky October Yearlings sale held Wednesday, October 26, at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky.

A filly from the final crop of champion Arrogate (Hip 1152) sold for $450,000 to Legacy Ranch from the consignment of Mill Ridge Sales, agent, to top the session (video). The gray or roan filly is out of the stakes winning Lemon Drop Kid mare Lemon Splendor, already the dam of four winners from four to race, including stakes winner Mo Maverick (Uncle Mo). The immediate family includes Grade 2 winners Doneraile Court and Dance Sequence. Hip 1152 was bred in Kentucky by Gentry Stable.

“(There’s been) a continuation of the strong market we’ve seen through the first two days of the sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “(We continue to see) widespread participation from buyers throughout the United States and around the world. We’re fortunate to be in the midst of a strong and resilient marketplace.”

White Birch Farm went to $400,000 to secure the session second-highest priced offering, a filly by three-time leading sire Into Mischief (Hip 991) consigned by Summerfield, agent (video). The bay filly is the second foal out the stakes placed Arch mare Hayworth, from the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Critical Eye. Hip 991 was bred in Kentucky by Brinker Hill Farm.

Rounding out the top five prices of the session were:

  • A colt by Not This Time (Hip 812), sold for $350,000 to Taproot Bloodstock, agent, from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The gray or roan colt is out of the winning Unbridled’s Song mare Edit, already the dam of two winners from two to race, including stakes placed Our Circle of Love (Distorted Humor). Hip 812 was bred in Kentucky by Taylor Made Stallions, George E. Saufley, et al.
  • A colt by Liam’s Map (Hip 1185), sold for $350,000 to Ingordo Bloodstock, agent, from the consignment of Brereton C. Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent. The bay colt is out of the Indian Charlie mare Listen to Libby, dam of four winners to date, including graded stakes winner and multiple stakes winner Chanteline (Majesticperfection) and multiple stakes winner Kell Paso (Divine Park). Hip 1185 was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones.
  • A colt by Not This Time (Hip 1149), sold for $320,000 to Spendthrift Farm from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The chestnut colt is out of 15-time winner Lee Gage, by Fit to Fight, already the dam of five winners, including Grade 1 placed graded stakes winner Engaginglee (Fusaischi Pegasus). Hip 1149 was bred in Kentucky by Lichtefeld and Stewart Racing.

“We anticipate some fireworks tomorrow,” added Browning. “(We) look forward to a successful conclusion of the Kentucky October Yearlings sale.”

During Wednesday’s session, 273 yearlings sold for $13,012,600, good for an average of $47,665 and a median of $25,000. Over the course of the first three days of selling, 804 yearlings changed hands for $41,540,500, up 5% from last year’s three-session gross of $39,511,600. The three-session average was $51,667, up 12% from $46,158 during the comparable period in 2021. The median over the first three sessions was $25,000, up 19% over last year’s three-session median of $21,000. The RNA rate for the first three sessions was 21%.
