Radical Right, Horses of Racing Age Top Midlantic December Mixed Sale
The Midlantic December Mixed & Horses of Racing Age sale enjoyed a successful renewal Tuesday in Timonium, Maryland. The sale posted an increase in average over last year’s edition, and the $260,000 sale topper was the second most expensive offering since the sale began offering a horses of racing age supplement in 2018.
Radical Right (Hip 281), second in the City of Laurel S. (LRL) on November 26, topped the sale when sold for $260,000 to Tom Kagele from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent (video). Supplemented to the Horses of Racing Age portion of the catalogue after his first stakes placing, Radical Right is a 3-year-old son of First Samurai out of the Sky Mesa mare Emily. Radical Right has a lifetime record of three wins, six seconds, and three thirds from 15 starts and earnings of $179,100.
Heldish (Hip 243), a multiple stakes placed winner this year at 2, sold for $160,000 to trainer Michael Maker from the consignment of GreenMount Farm, agent. By Great Notion, Maryland’s leading sire since 2017, out of the winning Street Sense mare Everything Magic, the 2-year-old colt finished second in the Maryland Million S. (LRL) on October 22 and third in the James F. Lewis III S. (LRL) on November 12 leading up to the sale. His career record stands at one win, three seconds, and two thirds, and he has never been off the board in five total starts. Heldish has earned $92,900 to date. Maryland-bred Heldish was purchased for $40,000 from the consignment of Becky Davis, agent, at last year’s Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale.
Maker also struck for Patient Capital (Hip 267), securing the 3-year-old gelded son of Practical Joke for $125,000 from the consignment of Marshal W. Silverman, agent. Out of the winning Awesome Again mare Blind Pool, Patient Capital is a two-time winner this year at 3, including a 7-length victory in open company at Aqueduct on November 26. Patient Capital has a lifetime record of two wins and two seconds from seven starts and earnings of $102,502.
We Dont Need Roads (Hip 199) rounded out the day’s four six-figure sales, selling for $100,000 to Jeff Parthemore from the consignment of Dreamtime Stables, agent. From the first crop of Grade 1 winner Hoppertunity, the Maryland-bredcolt is a two-time winner from four starts with earnings of $79,900 to date. We Dont Need Roads is out of the stakes placed Candy Ride (ARG) mare Dulcify, already the dam of four winners from four to race, including stakes placed Sweet Grace (Bandbox) and Lucky Trinity (El Padrino).
Bazinga C (Hip 286) was the top female horse of racing age, selling for $80,000 to Miller Racing from the consignment Northview Stallion Station, agent for Joseph Besecker. A 3-year-old Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Exaggerator out of the stakes placed Lion Heart mare Bazinga B, Bazinga C was a late entry coming off a third-place finish in the Safely Kept S. (LRL) on November 26. The filly won the New Start S. (PEN). Bazinga C boasts a record of six wins from 14 lifetime starts, with four seconds and a third, and earnings of $247,024.
A filly from the first crop of Grade 1 winner Global Campaign (Hip 139) was the sale’s top-priced weanling. Wellspring Stables purchased the chestnut filly for $75,000 from the consignment of Bill Reightler, agent for Country Life Farm & Partners. Hip 139 is the second foal out the of the stakes placed Teuflesberg mare Miss Mystique, a half-sister to stakes winner Brenda’s Way. The filly was bred in Maryland by Country Life Farm & Miss Mystique LLC.
The sale’s top broodmare was the stakes producing Scat Daddy mare In My Time (Hip 113), sold for $62,000 to Barak Farm, Wayne Potts, agent, from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station, agent. A multiple stakes placed winner herself, In My Time is already the dam of two winners from two to race, including stakes placed Chasin Munny (Munnings). She was offered in foal to current third-ranked Second-Crop Sire Practical Joke.
A colt by top-10 ranked First-Crop Sire Oscar Performance (Hip 179) was the sale’s top-priced yearling, sold for $45,000 to DKW Racing from the consignment of Marshall S. Silverman, agent. The chestnut colt is out of Naval Academy (Mizzen Mast), a half-sister to seven winners, including multiple graded stakes winners Coffee Clique and Admission Office. Hip 129 was bred in Maryland by Marathon Farms.
Overall, 172 horses sold for $3,233,600, good for an average of $18,800. That figure represents a 25.7% increase over last year’s average of $14,962. The median held steady at $10,000. The single-session sale posted significant increases in the top offering in most categories, including the sale topper, which increased 100% to $260,000 over last year’s top price of $130,000. The sale’s top weanling sold for $75,000, up 50% from 2021, while the sale’s top yearling rose 181.3% from $16,000 last year to $45,000 this year. The top racing/stallion prospect of 2021 sold for $60,000, while this year’s highest price for a colt horse of racing age was $160,000. The sale’s top racing prospect was the sale topper, sold for $260,000, a 100% increase over last year’s top selling racing prospect. The RNA rate was 24.6%.
