Uncle Mo Filly Tops First Session of Midlantic Fall Yearlings
The first session of the 2022 Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale was held Monday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. A filly by proven sire Uncle Mo topped the session, while offerings by first- and second-crop yearling sires accounted for half of the day’s top offerings.
A filly by Uncle Mo (Hip 158) topped the session when sold for $320,000 to Legion Bloodstock from the consignment of Scott Mallory, agent for Determined Stud (video). The filly is out of Grade 2 placed Andina (IRE), a stakes winner daughter of Singspiel, dam of five winners from as many foals to race. Andina is already the dam of two graded/group stakes winning fillies in Australia Mia (Street Sense), a multiple Group 2 winner in Chile, and Andina Del Sur (Giant’s Causeway), winner of the Florida Oaks (G3) and earner of more than $500,000. Hip 158 was bred in Maryland by Determined Stud.
Country Life Farm, agent, went to $155,000 to secure the day’s second-highest priced offering, a filly (Hip 157) from the second crop of top-10 first-crop sire Mendelssohn. The bay filly was consigned by Northview Stallion Station, agent. Out of Amie’s Legend, stakes winning daughter of Maryland stalwart Not For Love, Hip 157 is half-sister to five winners from starts, including stakes winner Ghoul’s Night Out (Ghostzapper). She was bred in Maryland by Two Legends Farm & Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds.
The session’s top colt (Hip 181), by successful young sire Nyquist, sold for $150,000 to Cary Frommer from the consignment of Becky Davis, agent. The dark bay or brown colt is out of the stakes winning Silver Train mare Bawlmer Hon, from the immediate family of of multiple stakes winners Proud Owned, Owned by All, and Ironton. Hip 181 was bred in Maryland by Bowman & Higgins Stable.
Rounding out Monday’s top five were:
- Hip 119, a colt by Mendelssohn out of the winning Domestic Dispute mare Undisputed Legend, sold to $145,000 to Cary Frommer from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station, agent. The colt is half-brother to nine-time stakes winner, graded stakes placed Whereshetoldmetogo (El Padrino). Hip 119 was bred in Maryland by David Wade.
- Hip 101, a colt by hot young sire Girvin out of the unraced Tiznow mare Tiz Possible, sold to Tom McCrocklin, agent for Champion Equine, from the consignment of Vinery Sales, agent. The colt’s second dam is Eclipse Champion Proud Spell and the immediate family includes 2021 Eclipse Champion Letruska, as well as Grade 1 winners J P’s Gusto and Imaginary Lady. Hip 101 was bred in New York by Mary Lester.
During Monday’s opening session, 145 yearlings sold for $3,947,200, good for an average of $27,222 and a median of $14,000. Twenty-three horses sold for $50,000 or more. The RNA rate for the session was 18.5%.
