The opening session of the Kentucky Winter Mixed sale, held Monday at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky, posted across-the-board grains over the comparable session from the previous year's sale.

Broodmare prospect Home Cooking (Hip 68) topped the session when sold for $500,000 to Steven W. Young, agent, from the consignment of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, agent (video). A winning daughter of Honor Code, Home Cooking was just a head second in the Del Mar Debutante S. (G1) at 2. Out of the winning Hard Spun mare Olympic Avenue, Home Cooking is a half-sister to multiple stakes placed winner Gold for Kitten (Kitten's Joy), from the immediate family of graded stakes winners Valid Expectations, Little Sister, and Alberts Hope.

"It was a very encouraging start to the Kentucky Winter Mixed sale," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. "There was lots of activity throughout the day, from start to finish, on all levels of horses and at all price ranges. The place was crowded from start to finish."

A colt by Constitution (Hip 242) was the session's highest-priced short yearling, sold for $300,000 to Discovery Bay from the consignment of Four Star Sales, agent (video). The chestnut colt is out of the unraced Broken Vow mare Special Thanks, already the dam of three winners from three to race, including graded stakes placed Eve of War (Declaration of War). Hip 242 was bred in Kentucky by Cypress Creek Equine.

Rounding out the top five hips were:

  • R Adios Jersey (Hip 191), a racing/broodmare prospect sold for $290,000 to JR Ranch from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. The Adios Charlie mare is a multiple graded stakes placed multiple stakes winning earner of $393,245 to date.
  • A yearling filly by Justify (Hip 224) sold for $290,000 to David Wade, agent, from the consignment of Blandford Stud, agent. The bay filly is out of the unraced Discreet Cat mare Shannon Faith and hails from the family of broodmare of the year and multiple graded 1 winner Take Charge Lady. Hip 224 was bred in Kentucky by Paget Bloodstock.
  • A yearling colt by Good Magic (Hip 141), sold for $270,000 to Castleton Way/Hard Five from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Out of the unraced Malibu Moon mare Moonlight Serenade, the bay colt is a half-brother to two winners, including graded stakes winner Dixie Serenade (Uptowncharlybrown). Hip 141 was bred in Pennsylvania by Uptowncharlybrown Stud.

"Obviously, we're looking forward to having the opportunity to sell some very nice horses tomorrow," added Browning, referring to the Lothenbach Stables Complete Dispersal of breeding stock and yearlings. "We'll do our best to represent (Mr. Lothenbach) and his estate."

Overall, 196 horses sold for $7,925,000, up 43% from last year's first session when 182 horses sold for $5,524,300. The session average was $40,436, up 33% from $30,353 last year, while the median rose 52% to $16,000 from $10,500. The RNA rate held steady at 17%.
