Bernardini Filly from Deep Family Shines During Opening Session of Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training
The 2024 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training sale began Monday with a solid session conducted in Timonium, Maryland. The session average and median were on par with the sale's previous three years' total numbers, each of which established a new sale record in gross, average, or median.
A Bernardini filly (Hip 276) topped the session when sold for $650,000 to Pedro Lanz, agent for KAS Stables, from the consignment of Crane Thoroughbred Services, agent (video). The dark bay or brown filly is out of Rubies Are Red, an unraced Medaglia d'Oro half-sister to leading sire Tapit and to the dams of Grade 2 winner Madefromlucky and stakes winner Noble and a Beauty. The immediate family further includes champions Rubiano and Summer Bird. Hip 276 worked an eighth in 10.0 during Thursday's under tack show.
The session's top colt (Hip 168) came from the third crop of successful young sire Good Magic, purchased for $525,000 by KSI from the consignment of Wavertree Stables, agent (video). The chestnut colt is out of the winning Discreet Cat mare Mellonbrook, a half-sister to multiple stakes winners/graded stakes placed Trooper John and Sky Haven. The colt hails from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Sharp Dance. Hip 168 worked an eighth in 10.2 during Tuesday's under tack show.
Rounding out the top five prices of the session were:
- A filly by Justify (Hip 171) out of multiple champion Mia Karina, sold for $500,000 to Case Clay Thoroughbred Management from the consignment of SGV Thoroughbreds, agent. From the family of champion Turkoman, the chestnut filly worked an eighth in 10.2 during Tuesday's under tack show.
- A filly by Bolt d'Oro (Hip 26) out of Final Reward, sold for $450,000 to MyRacehorse & Marquee Bloodstock from the consignment of de Meric Sales, agent. The bay filly is a half-sister to last year's graded stakes placed winning two-year-old Yatta (Yoshida-JPN) from the immediate family of influential sire Kitten's Joy, champion Dreaming of Anna, and multiple Grade 1 winner Precious Kitten. Hip 26 worked an eighth in 10.2 during Tuesday's under tack show.
- A filly by Munnings (Hip 56) out of Grade 2 winner Gold Medal Dancer, sold for $400,000 to Lael Stable from the consignment of Tom McCrocklin, agent. From the immediate family of champion Centrica, the chestnut filly worked and eighth in 10.2 during Tuesday's under tack show.
- A colt by Vekoma (Hip 137) out of Lightning Twice, sold for $400,000 to J.A.S. from the consignment of de Meric Sales, agent. Dam Lightning Twice has already produced two winners from two starters and is a full sister to Grade 2 winner Kauai Katie and graded stakes winner Winding Way, who produced last year's multiple Grade 1 performer Skinner. The dark bay or brown colt worked an eighth in 10.2 during Tuesday's under tack show.
During Monday's opening session, 142 juveniles sold for $13,162,000. The average was $92,690 and the median was $48,500.
